Labor regulations and policies

Castro & Salazar Law Group, normas y políticas laborales

Labor regulations in Colombia are important to understand if you want to contract nannies.

The minimum wage for domestic workers is currently set at 1,000,000 pesos per month. Working hours are limited to twelve hours per day and forty-eight hours per week. Overtime is not allowed unless an agreement is reached between the employer and employee.

If you’re hiring a nanny in Colombia, you should also be aware of some other labor laws:

  • Employers must provide their employees with an employment contract that specifies working hours, salary, benefits, and any other conditions agreed upon by both parties.
  • Employers must pay maternity leave for six weeks after giving birth, or until the mother returns to work if this occurs sooner.
  • Employers must grant one hour of rest per day for employees who work more than six consecutive hours without interruption during normal working hours (which are from 7 am until 5 pm). This rest period cannot be taken during mealtimes or during nighttime hours (from 10 pm until 7 am).
